  • The symbiosis of man and dog is probably the closest and at the same time also the oldest connection between man and nature. Since dogs as group-living animals honestly and without prejudice look for the conscious proximity to humans, this fact was already used in the last century particularly in the Anglo-American area in the psychological as well as pedagogical field. Since dogs as group-living animals honestly and without prejudice look for the conscious proximity to humans, this fact was already used in the last century particularly in the Anglo-American area in the psychological as well as pedagogical field. Because of the beneficial health factor on humans, dogs were then quickly trained here for a wide variety of areas - such as guide dogs for the blind, assistance dogs or therapy dogs, to name just a few. The boarding house of Caritas Don Bosco gGmbH, where this PhD project took place during a period of six months, accommodates young people who – due to their physical or psychological participation restriction – undergo a vocational rehabilitation measure. Due to failures in their previous (educational) career and because of their negative experiences or even social inability, many young people have little to no socio-emotional skills that are essential for living in a social as well as professional community. As the animal approaches the people concerned with no expectations, this unbiased behaviour can be taken advantage of. The dog, which reacts completely naturally to the behaviour of its counterpart, functions here as a means of education. The young people are thus given the opportunity to adjust their (non-)verbal behaviour in various practice interactions with the dog, in order to subsequently achieve an increase in socio-emotional competence, which can then be subconsciously applied to the interpersonal sphere. In order to obtain meaningful nonverbal micro-educational moments between the participant and the dog, which form the justification of the educational tool dog, the videos made during the training were analyzed with a reconstructive approach. This shows the extent to which the dog concerned can function as an assisting educational toolshow moreshow less
