The purpose of this study is to determine the statistically proved and reproducible anatomical-metrical precision of anatomical three-dimensional models in dependence on computed-tomography-parameters and production methods. The object of examination is the skull of a pig. Based on a helical-volume-CT-scan of an intact entire head of a pig a stereolithography model of the skull was manufactured. Based on a multi-slice-CT-scan of the same head a selective laser sintered model of the skull was produced. 75 anatomical landmarks, comparable to anthropometrical landmarks, were determined and 200 different distances between these measuring points were measured on the macerated pigs skull and both 3D-models. The deviations of both models from the macerated skull amount to an average of +/- 0,88 mm, respectively 2,7 per cent. The maximal deviation is from -3,0 mm to +3,2 mm. These data are neither dependent on the kind of data acquisition nor on the above mentioned production methods. Since there is no difference concerning accuracy the multi-slice-CT-scans are to be prefered to data acquisition for 3D model manufacturing because of shorter CT-data acquisition time and lower x-ray exposition.show moreshow less
