In order to profit from the various economic and ecological advantages of water it was therefore the aim of this investigation to develop and characterize water based slurry compositions. Hereby a basic understanding of the interactions among the slurry components (water as solvent, ceramic powder, dispersant, binder system) and their influences on the flow properties of the slurries and the characteristics of the dried green tapes was to be gained. Barium titanate (BaTiO3) was chosen as ceramic powder, as it is the base component for most ceramic multi-layer capacitors, which are usually prepared by tape casting. Basic investigations have shown that the BaTiO3-powder is not stable in water. High amounts of Ba2+-ions are dissolved and the pH-value of the solution increases above 10. Because of the re-adsorption of the dissolved Ba2+-ions on the powder surface, the particles show a positive surface potential even under basic conditions. However, the potential is not high enough to guarantee an electrostatic dispersion of the particles. Good powder dispersion could be achieved with two polymeric dispersants, an electrosterically effective polymethacrylate and a predominantly sterically effective block-copolymer. The diverse combinations of the dispersants with three binders (a partially and a fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) as dissolved binders and a dispersion latex binder) enabled four slurry compositions with quite different flow properties (Newtonian to strong shear thinning). Specific "internal" structures of the slurries, which are based on attractive interactions among the organic additives, dissolved Ba2+-ions and the BaTiO3-particles, could be identified as the origin for the typical flow characteristics. The structures increase the viscosity of the slurries at low to moderate shear conditions and thus determine their shear thinning characteristics. Furthermore the structures could be correlated with microstructural green tape properties. A stronger structure impedes the gliding of the particles during the green tape densification of the drying process more thoroughly, therefore leading to green tapes with lower particle packing densities, a lower green density, higher porosity and a high surface roughness. Regarding the influence of both the binder and the particle concentration on the viscosity of the slurry, an exponential relationship could be determined for the slurries with PVA as binder. In both cases has the total amount of binder in the slurry, which was related to the amount of BaTiO3, been identified as the major factor of influence, while the influence of the particle concentration itself was comparatively small in the investigated range of slurry compositions. As the binder molecules also determine the makeup of the slurry structure, an influence of the binder concentration on the shear thinning characteristics was identified, whereas no influence of the particle concentration could be found. With the slurries containing the latex binder it has been shown that the binder particles have to be regarded as an addition to the solid loading. Accordingly, a modified Krieger-Dougherty-equation has been used to describe the relationship between the composition and the viscosity of the slurries. The much lower viscosity of the latex binder, compared to that of the PVA-binders, enabled slurries with much higher BaTiO3-contents (~ 40-45 vol.%) than in the slurries with PVA-binder (~ 25-30 vol.%). To sum up, the new slurry compositions provide a set of water based tape casting slurries with different flow characteristics. With the help of the relationships between the composition and the viscosity of the slurries, the slurry compositions can easily be adapted to the specific needs of a tape casting process and the required green tape properties. The derived "internal" structures of the slurries provide a basic understanding of the influences and interactions of the respective slurry components and help to meet the requirements of a tape casting process and to solve problems more stringently.show moreshow less
