• Die Konversationsanalyse ist aufgrund ihrer empirischen und gegenstandsfundierten Methodologie vielen anderen Ansätzen der Erforschung von Gesprächen überlegen. Diese Überlegenheit hat jedoch einen gravierenden Mangel: Die Konversationsanalyse verfügt über keine adäquate Interpretationstheorie und ignoriert deshalb, wie grundlegend die Wissensvoraussetzungen des Analytikers und ihr Einsatz für Prozess und Resultate konversationsanalytischer Untersuchungen sind. Am Beispiel ethnographischen Wissens wird gezeigt, an welchen systematischen Stellen spezifische Hintergrundwissensbestände genutzt werden können, um zu einer adäquateren konversationsanalytischen Auswertung zu gelangen. Abschließend wird diskutiert, welchen Prüfkriterien der Einsatz ethnographischen Wissens bei der Konversationsanalyse zu genügen hat.
• A rigid empirical and phenomenologically based methodology provides for conversation analysis' advantages over other approaches to the study of discourse. This superiority, however, is seriously flawed at one point: CA misconstrues the indispensable role interpretation plays for the analysis of discourse. It therefore neglects the preconditions and the effects by which the analysts' knowledge inevitably shapes the process and the results of conversation analytic studies. One sort of knowledge that is most important in this respect is ethnographic knowledge. It is shown that there are several systematic issues which favor or even require ethnographic knowledge to be used in order to improve and validate a conversation analytic study. The paper closes with a discussion of criteria for the adequacy to appeal to bits of ethnographic knowledge when analysing talk-in interaction.
