The empirical study results from fieldwork on two South German castles, Burg Hohenzollern and Meersburg. Its aim is to inquire into the social construction of tourism, i.e. to grasp touristic experiences in statu nascendi. Starting with the assumption that modern travelling is linked to the search of the sacred, the central question was how exactly the crossing from everyday life to festivity happens. The collected data suggest, however, that a journey, at least a journey to a medieval castle in Southern Germany, is not just a singular transcendence from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Tourists can rather be observed how they permanently shift between everyday life and festivity. In this sense order and chaos, fact and fiction, and seriousness and playfulness constitute each other.
Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache
Die vorliegende empirische Studie resultiert aus zwei Feldforschungen auf süddeutschen Burgen, Hohenzollern und Meersburg. Sie hat zum Ziel, die soziale Konstruktion touristischer Wirklichkeit zu untersuchen, d.h. touristisches Erleben in statu nascendi zu erfassen. Ausgehend von Theorien, die modernes Reisen mit der Suche nach dem Heiligen in Verbindung bringen, war die zentrale Fragestellung, wie die Grenzüberschreitung vom Alltag zum Fest genau passiert. Die erhobenen Daten zeigen jedoch, dass es sich bei der Reise, zumindest im Burgentourismus, nicht um eine einmalige Grenzüberschreitung vom Alltäglichen zum Außerordentlichen handelt. Vielmehr haben wir es mit permanenten Grenzüberschreitungen vom Alltag zum Fest und zurück zum Alltag zu tun. In diesem Sinne konstituieren sich Ordnung und Chaos, Fakt und Fiktion sowie Ernst und Spiel wechselseitig.
