The contours of Sefarad and Ashkenaz are not drawn in any existing map of Europe. These countries, however, exist in a metaphorical space, beyond geographical, historical and political borders. To use a term created by Michael Foucault, they are heterotopies - spaces that exist beyond or at the fringes of traditional territories. The very existence of these abstract territories jeopardizes all basical principIes of topography. This article tries to re-visit these countries at three particular moments: l. The Golden Age, which is characterized by the flourishing of a specifically Jewish culture, parallel to a non-assimilative integration. 2. It's destruction. 3. It's metamorphosis into a place of memory (lieu de mémoire). Based on these three dstinct periods, it is possible do draw a "Jewish map" of Europe, the conception of which departs from the history of our places. This will not only allows us to recall the presence of their virtual existen ce, but al so to oppose a counter-history to the traditional western european cartography, drawing it from the margins of the "official" history.
