Übersetzter Titel: Meaning of life, goals and happiness: The causal relationship between conception of meaning of life and aspects of goals and happiness (Englisch)
Übersetzung des Abstracts: One can identify three conceptions of meaning of life (short: cml): A nihilistic cml – according to which the life does not have a meaning -, a humanistic cml – which defines meaning of life as a mental self-construction - and a metaphysical cml – according to which meaning of life is somewhat independently real -. Examined were (causal) relationships between cml on the one hand and aspects of goals and happiness on the other hand. Regarding cml and goal aspects a tendency of extremity was assumed, implying that the divergence of goal importance, goal persecution, goal persistence (and further subordinated goal aspects) between subjective important and subjective unimportant goals increases the more meaning of life is considered as something real: Whereby a nihilistic cml attributes no reality to meaning of life, a metaphysical cml does so to a further extend than a humanistic cml. Examined cross-sectionally, this tendency could be confirmed in general; investigated longitudinally, it could be confirmed for the subjective important goals only (i.e. metaphysical cml > humanistic cml > nihilistic cml) and, examined experimentally, for the subjective unimportant goals only (i.e. metaphysical cml < humanistic cml < nihilistic cml). Thus, goal importance in general turned out to be a mediating factor. Regarding cml and happiness, as expected the existence of a positive (bidirectional causal) relationship between attribution of reality to meaning of life and happiness could be shown. This accounts for cross-sectional and longitudinal examinations, respectively. However, experimentally examined in contrast to the expectation, not the affirmation, but the negation of meaning of life was associated with happiness. Nevertheless, it showed that happiness is closer associated to the affirmation than the negation of meaning of life. It could not be confirmed that optimism mediates between clm and happiness: In none of the accomplished studies (except the cross-sectional) that could be found. Also, altogether the accomplished studies point out to a (causal) relationship between clm on the one hand and physical and/or mental health, subjective meaning of happiness, subjective sources of happiness and experience of happiness on the other hand. As expected, the effects of cml on aspects of goals and of happiness cannot be explained by religiousness. The original contributions of this work are two: First of all, in the concept of cml, which was conceived up until now only dichotomous (affirmation of meaning of life vs. negation of meaning of life), is now conceived tri- and/or tetrachotomous (nihilistic cml vs. humanistic cml vs. metaphysical cml [agnostic-metaphysical cml vs. gnostic- metaphysical cml]). Secondly, cml was investigated longitudinally and/or experimentally, while before it has been examined cross-sectional exclusively. (Englisch)
