Our Journal of Marine Science and Technology is struggling to become one of the leading journals in the field of marine-related research. Our latest impact factor, using the ISI Science Citation Index System, was 0.838 and the number of pages has increased from roughly 550 per year to 750 or more. The support from the Japan Society of Promotion of Science enabled us to launch new schemes including featured papers, which can be downloaded by wider communities, and virtual special issues for crucial topics. On this occasion I would like to thank all authors, reviewers and editors for their tremendous efforts in supporting our journal.

I served as the Editor-in-Chief, succeeding Prof. Masahiko Fujikubo for 4 years, and now the time has come for me to introduce the new Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Ken Takagi from the University of Tokyo, who effectively served as the associate editor responsible for ocean engineering areas. Given his excellent capabilities and your continuing support, I have no doubt that our JMST will further expand its important role in our research fields under his leadership.

It is a great honor for me to succeed Professor Naoya Umeda of Osaka University as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Technology (JMST). Thanks to the excellent leadership and efforts of Professor Umeda and his predecessors as Editor-in-Chief, JMST has established an international reputation as one of the major academic journals in the field of naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, nautical studies, and related areas.

One of the missions of scientific journals is to rapidly disseminate innovative research to researchers who are currently active in the community. It is also important to convey the universally valuable outcomes of these studies to future generations. Fortunately JMST is recognized worldwide as a suitable journal for fulfilling these missions, due to the outstanding efforts of our associate editors, deputy editors and peer reviewers. As Editor-in-Chief of JMST, I hope to further improve our journal’s quality, helping it fulfill these missions. I look forward to doing so with you!
