Abstract
Effi Briest’s trembling is her central form of expression. According to bourgeois 19th century maxims of education direct affect signals are prohibited. In order to develop an emotional culture of their own especially women are forced to develop a masking or supplementary body language: dramatic spectacle, illness, and death are the metaphors for the dissociation of identity following the expulsion of emotions.
