Summary

Two methods were applied to study OH coverage of alumina with FTIR-spectroscopy:

  1. 1.

    Adsorption of well defined amounts of water (rehydration method);

  2. 2.

    Conversion of OH groups on alumina samples into the completely associated form by D2O adsorption.

OH coverage determination with these methods was applied to a major number of samples prepared in different ways (preheating without or with partial rehydration). On the basis of these results it was possible to derive a general relation allowing to determine the OH coverage of γ-alumina from the integration of the OH valence band in three partial wavenumber intervals.
