Background: The implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda is progressing just slowly. Despite clear formulations and commitments of the 194 participating countries to the joint agreements, institutions and civil society have been insufficiently informed and involved. Neither the progress nor the upcoming tasks in the areas of ecology, economy and social affairs are perceived. In order to carry out the necessary transformation in the sense of the affected world population, target group-oriented educational formats and fields of action are needed. In the field of vocational training, the transfer of knowledge is combined with the possibility of practical implementation. To illustrate the current engagement with SDG 3 (health and well-being), this bachelor thesis conducted qualitative research in the country contexts of The Gambia and Germany.
Objective: To capture participatory approaches to engage vocational health education students in the implementation of SDG3 using country-specific themes with the implementation of an educational project and expert interviews in the bachelor thesis, qualitative research was conducted using a combined methodological approach. In addition to an in-depth literature review, an educational project was conducted at Gambia College Brikama in March 2022. Four expert interviews are available which form the basis for a Qualitative Content Analysis.
Results: The results of the literature review show the current status of the dissemination and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals based on various sources. A survey conducted worldwide, and country-specific monitoring demonstrate the current lack of knowledge about the SDGs among the population. The collection and analysis of expert interviews with the application of a Qualitative Content Analysis reveal the need for dissemination of the SDGs in vocational education and training and provide suggestions for implementation.
Conclusion: The countries of The Gambia and Germany equally demonstrate the lack of knowledge about the SDGs among the population. The opportunity to raise awareness in professional health schools towards SDG 3 is seen and differentiated. Implementation efforts will continue on a country-specific basis.
