The Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) Framework has transformed our understanding of quality care. From its conceptual basis as a synthesis of the global literature on quality care, this talk will discuss how the Framework has influenced maternity policy as well as midwifery practice and education through the newly-published UK standards of proficiency for midwives and the standards for pre-registration midwifery programmes. The talk will also discuss how the QMNC Framework has been adapted to evaluate maternity care, and how it is being transformed into a global service evaluation tool.
