The aim of this presentation is to familiarize the participants with a new technique of treating presbyopia, which is the implantation of intracorneal inlays in emmetropic patients. A short review of the latest results of the currently used inlays is presented, along with the presenter’s personal experience with the refractive corneal inlay ‘Presbia MicrolensTM’.

The lens was implanted inside a corneal pocket created in the non-dominant eye of 45 patients using femtosecond laser. Mean uncorrected visual acuity for near increased from 20/100 to 20/25 and for distance decreased from 20/20 to 20/40 in the operated eye, whereas remained stable binocularly. After surgery 92% referred no use of reading glasses. No intra/post-operative complications were found.

Furthermore, the refractive corneal inlay may be used in pseudophakic patients for improving near vision acuity. We present our experience on that subject.

Final conclusions state that refractive corneal inlay is a safe and effective method for improving near vision acuity in presbyopic and pseudophakic patients.
