Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of new presbyopia laser correction procesure, Supracor, in Korean patients.

Patients and methods: Inclusion criteria were; age over 50 years old, near add greater than +1.75 D, refractive error greater than +1.0 D, and no history of eye surgery. Supracor procedure with Technolas 217p excimer laser (B&L) was performed to treat hyperopia and presbyopia. This new algorithm was supposed to induce central corneal elevation resulting in negative spherical aberration. Post-operative VA and visual symptoms were evaluated up to 12 months.

Results: Fourteen patients (28 eyes) were in this study. Average age was 57.3+/- 4.2. BCDVA better than 0.8 was achieved in all patients at post-operative 6 and 12 months. Negative spherical aberration increased postoperatively in all eyes. Binocular UCNA better than 0.4, which needed for news paper reading, was achieved 75.4% at post-operative 3 months, 45.5% at 6 months and 66.7% at 12 months. Overall satisfaction rate was about 70% at post-operative 12months, however, 83% of patients was willing to recommend this procedure to others. Compared with European study, satisfaction rate was lower.

Conclusion: Supracor treatment induced negative spherical aberration, increased NVA. and seemed to be safe. However, prebyopia correcting effect seemed to decrease over the time. Ethnical or cultural factors might be the reasons for different results from European study.
