The purposes of this research were to compare the differences of pharyngeal aerodynamics characteristics between normal people and OSA patients and to explore the contributing effect of total nasal airway resistance to the pathophysiology of OSA patients.

A prospective research was designed to investigate the alteration of pharyngeal aerodynamics characteristics in 60 OSA patients by comparing with 60 normal people with the method of CFD. The indices of total nasal airway resistance, average pressure and average velocity in cross sectional plane in pharyngeal cavity would be extracted from numerical analysis and compared between normal people and OSA patients.The indices of average pressure and average velocity in three transverse cross-sectional planes were extracted for analysis with the method of CFD, and the correlation analysis between nasal resistance and average pressure in pharyngeal cavity was implemented too. The results showed that the negative pressure in pharyngeal cavity was significantly higher in OSA patients and the total nasal airway resistance correlated well with average pressure in three consecutive transverse cross-sectional planes in pharyngeal cavity. The increased negative pressure in pharyngeal cavity contributed to the increased collapsibility in OSA patients to some level. The good correlation implicated that the nose acted as a predisposing factor for the pathogenesis of OSA.
