Background: In 2011 the Guideline International Network (G-I-N) and the International Federation for Emergency Medicine Emergency (IFEM) established a formal partnership to undertake work through the G-I-N Emergency Care Community working group. This collaboration brings together international leaders from the field of emergency care seeking to improve improve the uptake of evidence based practice internationally.
Context: The partnership offers the opportunity to work closely with health practitioners across acute care environments in underdeveloped, developing and developed health care settings and the ability to foster research networks to evaluate outcomes from implementation of guideline recommendations and evidence based protocols.
Description of best practice: Activities of the G-I-N IFEM partnership will focus on the identification, and prioritisation of guideline recommendations applicable to acute care settings. The first phase of this work was to survey the IFEM member organizations to identify their clinical priority areas and the guidelines they use. Preliminary data has revealed significant clinical gaps where guidelines are required, this will be presented. Further work will be undertaken to identify relevant guidelines, assess the quality of the guidelines, disseminate prioritised recommendations, and develop local implementation plans. IFEM will use their research networks to evaluate the outcomes of pilot implementation projects.
Lessons for guideline developers, adaptors, implementers, and/or users: The lessons to be shared will be those of building collaboration and networks to identify guidelines and recommendations across different health care to local meet clinical priorities.
