Introduction: The Eastern Republic of Uruguay has a total population of 3.300.000 inhabitants, distributed in 19 provinces. One of these departments is the capital Montevideo, which brings 1.700.000 inhabitants. The rest of the population is divided among the remaining 18 departments in the field or in cities, most fewer than 30.000 inhabitants.
Materials and methods: This distribution and the distance between cities motivates surgeons who reside within the rural side of the country should play an " enhanced general surgery", meaning this, that in addition to classical general surgery they should deal with surgery in children, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery and gynecological surgery in many cases.
Results: This poster shows a group experience of the city of Carmelo, with approximately 20.000 inhabitants with a coverage area of 50.000 inhabitants, where the correct organization of technicians, a continuing medical training in courses and conferences outside the country, based on the formalization of procedures, an effective teamwork, and the development of advanced technology has achieved a level of excellence in medical care, especially accompanying the development of laparoscopic surgery.
