Stoma recurrence following total laryngectomy is one of the most severe complications with extremely poor prognosis.
Objective: The aim of our study is to analyze the risk factors for stoma recurrence development and to highlight the measures for prevention.
Materials and methods: We preformed retrospective study on 530 patients who underwent total laryngectomy at Queen Giovanna Hospital end Ministry of Interior Medical Institute, Sofia for a period of 2 years.
Results: Stoma recurrence developed in 9 cases. Our analysis reveals that primary site, T stage, preoperative tracheotomy and paratracheal lymph node metastasis are significant risk factors for stoma recurrence.
Conclusion: In spite of extensive surgery, radio and chemotherapy the prognosis is very poor. Considering the high rate of mortality, the prevention and intensive follow-up for patients with risk factors is of great importance in order to reduce the frequency of this disease.
