The primary goal of a university education is student learning. In the U.S., universities are divided into teaching institutions and research institutions according to their primary focus. Many relatively unknown teaching institutions achieve consistently better learning outcomes than well-known top research universities. There is therefore in the U.S. a movement to define the excellence of an institution in terms of the learning outcomes it achieves rather than the research it produces. We will explore this development and the focus it puts on teaching as a career.
