The Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) is a freestanding, dedicated proton radiotherapy facility located in southeastern Virginia, USA. The facility began construction in July, 2007, and is expected to treat patients in August, 2010. The 98,000 square foot HUPTI building is complete. Over 95% of the (IBA) equipment is on site, including the cyclotron, beam line, four gantry treatment rooms, fixed beam treatment room, additional research room, and accompanying infrastructure. The facility has begun beam testing, and will begin final acceptance testing in winter 2010. HUPTI plans to treat over 2000 patients annually when fully operational. A research center is planned to complement the establishment of this clinical facility, focusing particularly on radiobiological studies and advanced instrumentation development.

A brief history and overview of this project will be presented. HUPTI design, goals, implementation, plans, timeline, patients, and research will be briefly discussed.
