From admiration to pity: changes in how singles are perceived and the re-emergence of traditional values

'Singles have always been viewed with ambivalence. In the 1990's, negative perceptions of singles gained prevalence. Today, singles are considered deficient. This trend is mainly due to changes in values: values relating to community, security, and order have re-emerged to challenge the previously dominant values of individual development and self-actualisation. This re-emergence is due to disillusionment, especially among young adults, with efforts (e.g. of their own parents) to achieve individualization and self-actualisation, and is also related to economic insecurity. It is uncertain how practicable these 'new old' values of community and security will be in light of future conditions, such as labour-market demands.' (author's abstract)|... view less
