Zur Rolle von Items in der Facettentheorie

The role of items in facet theory

'Items play a central role in empirical research. In many research projects, they are available, more or less explicitly, at an early stage, often before there is much of a theory. It is therefore suggested to take a closer look at these items in order to uncover and evolve the implicit research design from the content of these items. This approach reverses the usual textbook recommendation that theory should precede items. A cookbook procedure for an item-based facet-theoretical approach is outlined. On closer inspection, it turns out not to be a linear process, but rather a ping-pong approach that involves several partners (items, design explication, empirical hypotheses, theory laws, data, etc.).'
