Abstract
Despite being challenged by certain currents in urban studies, the categories of city and country resist being dissolved into a generalised urban. They are still relevant categories for thinking about and analysing socio-spatial phenomena in social representations as well as in reality. In this chapter, I illustrate this proposition in the Swiss context by showing that the period of the Covid 19 pandemic was conducive to the resurgence of anti-urban and pro-rural discourses, that it stimulated a flight from the cities to the countryside but also that it reinforced the definition of a garden city combining urban and rural imaginaries.
