Abstract
Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) was initially developed in order to treat children having cardiopathies
with excessive pulmonary blood flow by inducing an artificial stenosis of the pulmonary artery (PA),thus
reducing pulmonary blood flow and pulmonary artery pressure prior to the corrective surgery.(1)
Difficulties to optimally adjust the tightening of the conventional PAB during surgery commonly led to
multiple additional procedures, increasing the risk of damage to the pulmonary artery. (2) (3)(4).
An innovative technology, a battery free, wireless telemetric PAB (FloWatch-PAB) was developed in
Switzerland to overcome these complications and limitations. It was implanted in 69 patients. This study
investigated the medium-term and long-term outcomes of all patients implanted with the FloWatch-
PAB in Switzerland between 2002 and 2016. It showed that the duration of stay in the intensive care
unit, the proportion of patient with pulmonary artery damage and more importantly the number of
additional surgeries following implantation to adjust the band was lower in patients with the FloWatch-
PAB when compared to the literature on conventional PAB.
To conclude, the FloWatch-PAB is a unique device which has the main advantages of being able to adjust
band tightening and opening avoiding multiple surgeries in children with complex heart defects and to
minimize pulmonary artery damage avoiding pulmonary artery reconstruction and long-term
pulmonary artery complications.
