Zusammenfassung:
The topological cycle space C(G) of an infinite graph G has been introduced in 2004 by Diestel and Kühn. It enabled them to extend the cycle space theorems, which show the interaction of the cycle space of a finite graph G with the combinatorial structure of G, in particular with commonly investigated graph properties like connectivity or planarity, to locally finite graphs. The definition of C(G) was given in combinatorial terms and was based on the Freudenthal compactification |G| of G. The main aim of this thesis was to investigate if C(G) can also be defined in terms of homology.

Simplicial homology is obviously not the right approach for this aim; this thesis investigates the singular homology (Chapter 4) and the Cech homology (Chapter 5) of |G|. The main result of Chapter 4 is that C(G) is usually a proper quotient of the first singular homology group of |G|: The natural homomorphism from the first homology group of |G| to C(G) is always surjective but not normally injective. On the other hand, the first Cech homology group is canonically isomorphic to C(G). But this group isomorphism does not enable us to extend the cycle space theorems to Cech homology: The definition of Cech homology as an inverse limit causes a loss of information. In particular, one cannot determine which elements of the first Cech homology group correspond to circles in |G|, which is an essential part of many cycle space theorems.

In order to prove the non-injectivity of the homomorphism from Chapter 4 we develop in Chapter 3 a combinatorial characterization of the fundamental group of |G|, a result which serves as a tool in Chapter 4 but which is also a desirable result in its own right. The characterization of the fundamental group uses infinite words whose letters are the chords of a fixed topological spanning tree of G. This characterization re-proves the characterization of the fundamental group of the Hawaiian Earring given by Higman and by Cannon and Conner.

The last aim of this thesis is then to construct a homology theory, based on singular simplices, which generalizes the topological cycle space to a broader class of spaces. This task is completed in Chapter 6: We define a homology theory for locally compact Hausdorff spaces that captures, for locally finite graphs G and dimension one, precisely the topological cycle space of G and that satisfies the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms for homology.
