Summary

In the first part of this work a new class of thermoplastic elastomers was attained. Copolymers of propene and hexacosene (Cn = 26 - 28) were synthesized in the presence of three different metallocene catalyst systems with altered symmetry such as rac-[Me2Si(2-Me-4-(1-Naph)Ind)2]ZrCl2 (I), [Ph2C(Cp)(Flu)]ZrCl2 (F2) and [(H3C)2Si(9-Flu)2]ZrCl2 (J) activated by methylaluminoxane. Therefore, the polypropene copolymers were obtained with iso-, syndio- and atactic backbone microstructures by varying the content of comonomer in the feed up to 46.6 mol%. The influence of the incorporated linear ethylene based side chains on the physical and chemical properties of the polypropene backbone were investigated by DSC, GPC and 13C-NMR. In general, decreasing content of comonomer in the feed enhances the activity of metallocene based catalysts. Moreover, the determination of the branched microstructure of the copolymers by 13C-NMR allows a precise identification of the inserted hexacosene amount because of the separated backbone and side chain signals. The copolymerisation behaviour of all used metallocenes in this work shows only a slight range to the amount of incorporated hexacosene at the same monomer ratios in the feed. The maximum incorporation of hexacosene in the copolymer was between 15 – 18 mol% at the comonomer content of 46 mol% in the feed. The melting point of the syndiotactic and isotactic polypropene backbone decreases with increasing hexacosene content. Independent from this, a second melting point can be observed when inserted comonomer content exceeds 2 mol%. This can be assigned as the melting point of the partially crystallized ethylene based side chains.
In the second part of this work was focused on the synthesis of long chain branched polypropenes by the direct copolymerization of propene and vinyl terminated macromers with defined properties by metallocene catalysis. In an analogous way to the first part also in use of catalysts I, F2 and J copolymers with syndio-, iso- and atactic microstructure was synthesized. The copolymers were analysed by 13C-NMR spectroscopy, DSC and GPC. In addition to that, branch detection was studied by melt rheology and SEC MALLS in this work.
Oligoethenes were carried out by using [Me2Si(Cp)2]ZrCl2 (1) und [Me2C(Cp)2]ZrCl2 (2) with MAO as cocatalyst to obtain macromers with a well defined chain length. The molar masses of produced macromers were controlled by polymerization temperature and monomer concentration in the feed. However, depending on the polymerization parameters like the macromer concentration and polymerization temperature molar masses of the macromers were adjusted with catalyst 2 between 3000 and 11600 g/mol. By using catalyst 1 it was possible to generate macromers with molar masses from 15000 g/mol up to 130000 g/mol.
The most difficult part of this work represents the extraction of the copolymer from bimodal product. The process of solution fractionation for broad distributed polyethenes by Kong was successfully used for isolation of the long chain branched copolymers after the copolymerization. This kind of extraction was limited by the molar mass of the macromer up to 15000 g/mol.
Three macromers with the molar masses of 3000, 6500 and 11600 g/mol were investigated in the copolymerization with propene. In the first part, copolymers with different backbone tacticities were synthesized. Besides that, in the second part syndiotactic copolymers were made at different ratios of comonomer in the feed with catalyst F2 to investigate the relationship of branch content and branch length to the material performances. The amount of branch was detected by 13C-NMR spectroscopy. In comparison of the three catalysts the Cs symmetric metallocene F2 shows the best performance. The maximum comonomer content of 0.037 mol% in the polymer was reached in this part with the shortest macromer at 0.00167 mol in the feed. The results of the concentration series depict the incorporation is independent of the comonomer length. The copolymers from this series reach a maximum of 26 wt% macromere in the copolymer.
Also a decreasing stereoregularity at increasing macromer content in the polymer can be observed. The investigation of the thermal behaviour shows a decrease of the melting point with an increasing population of branches, but variation of the side chain length has no effect.
The resulting trends of 13C NMR analysis can be qualitative confirmed by rheological and light scattering experiments. The decrease depends on the population of branches and correspondents with the determined results by 13C NMR spectroscopy. On the other hand side a detection long chain branches was done by size exclusion chromatography coupled with a light scattering instrument.
