Within the group of polyvalent organohalogen compounds, those with 10 or more valence electrons are of great interest for fundamental research. Iodanes RIF2 with electron withdrawing R groups have long since been known. This work describes the first successful synthesis of the corresponding bromanes. The even more challenging synthesis of a similar series of chloranes remains, as far as we know, unachieved to this date. The synthesis of ortho-, meta-, and para-fluorophenylbromine difluorides succeeds by nucleophilic fluorine-aryl-substitution on bromine trifluoride in CH2Cl2/MeCN-solution at –40 °C. The weakly Lewis-acidic bis(fluorophenyl)mercury turns out to be a suitable aryl-transferring reagent which leads to only one fluorine-aryl-exchange. The second substitution on RBrF2 is blocked and thus no formation of bromonium salts can occur. The FC6H4-group transfer succeeds with aryltrimethylstannanes as well. ortho-, meta-, and para-fluorophenylbromine difluorides are isolated as colourless or pale yellow, temperature-sensitive, intrinsically instable compounds and are characterized by NMR. In case of fluorophenyltrimethylsilanes, RBrF2 can also be obtained via the para isomer. o- and m-FC6H4SiMe3 react with BrF3 by difluorobromodeprotonation in para-position relative to fluorine to 4-F-3-(SiMe3)C6H3BrF2 respectively 4-F-2-(SiMe3)C6H3BrF2. The 10 % yield of difluorobromodesilylation is relatively low. The different reaction course indicates a decrease of nucleophilicity of the ipso carbon atom as well as the activation of the para-C-H-bond relative to the fluorine substituent. 4-F-3-(SiMe3)C6H3BrF2 melts at 88 °C and decomposes above 155 °C (DSC). In contrast, 4-F-2-(SiMe3)C6H3BrF2 cannot be characterized and isolated as a solid. Derivatisation of 4-F-2-(SiMe3)C6H3BrF2 is essential for the verification of its constitution. The bromonium salts [{4-F-2-(SiMe3)C6H3}(FnC6H5-n)Br][BF4] (n = 1 – 3) can be characterized in solution. The isolation of the pure compounds is not possible. The transfer of the m-CF3C6H4 group on BrF3 succeeds with aryl trimethylstannane and –silane whereas o-CF3C6H4BrF2 cannot be obtained by the application of aryltrimethylsilane or –stannane. Isolated m-CF3C6H4BrF2 is a pale yellow solid which we characterize by NMR spectroscopy. The reaction of BrF3 with Me3SiCN yields cyanobromine difluoride NCBrF2. The synthesis can be carried out either with or without the use of MeCN (solvating agent for BrF3) whereas in the former case MeCN is not completely removable from the bromine(III) compound. The colourless product is an explosive at room temperature. It is characterized by RAMAN and NMR at –40 °C. NCBrF2 is hardly soluble in dichlormethane at –40 °C due to a possible intermolecular interaction between bromine(III) and CN or fluorine.
