The essay discusses terminologies and conceptualizations, especially the juxtaposition of forced and free migrations, gender and migrant agency. It addresses migration systems and criticizes transnational approaches, arguing that a translocal-transregional approach is empirically more sound; acculturation is “transcultural.” The essay discusses recent publications on present-day migration, as well as new research on migration during the Middle Ages. The essay concludes by emphasizing the importance of the new migrations occurring at the turn of the 21st century and addressing the research needs that result from global shifts of economic power and banker-induced crises.
