Fe3C is a intermetallic compound, which has almost the same temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient of the Fe65Ni35 Invar alloy, whereby a high-moment (HM) to low-moment (LM) transition should occur when the atomic volume is reduced below a critical value. A magnetovolume instability is a rapid change of the magnetic moment with respect to a small change in the atomic volume. This work is on to the search of magnetovolume instability in Fe3C and lattice and magnetic properties of Fe3C associated with magnetovolume instability. We have studied the equation of state of Fe3C particles below and above the Curie temperature (room temperature and 550 K respectively) by energy-dispersive X-Ray scattering under high pressure up to 20 GPa to search for a softening associated with magnetovolume instability characteristic of Invar-type material. The isothermal bulk modulus of Fe3C particles at room temperature was found to be about 14 % smaller than that of the value at 550 K. This difference is comparable with the relative difference in the bulk modulus of Fe66Ni34 Invar in a similar temperature range around the Curie temperature. It is necessary to compliment the equation of state studies by pressure studies sensitive to the magnetic response in order to confirm the presence of magneto-volume instabilities in Fe3C particles. We, therefore, examined the pressure dependence of the Fe K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in Fe3C particles at ambient temperature and pressures up to 20 GPa. The intensity initially shows no appreciable variation with pressure up to 8 GPa. This points out that Fe3C remain in the HM state up to 8 GPa. The intensity begins to decrease rapidly around 10 GPa and remains constant above 15 GPa as the LM state is reached. This corresponds to LM-state at this pressure. A clear transition from a high-moment to a low-moment state is observed without any hysteresis in the increasing and decreasing pressure data. In order to show that this effect is not due to the Curie temperature falling below room temperature, we have measured the pressure dependence of AC-susceptibility of Fe3C particles and determined the pressure dependence of the Curie temperature of Fe3C particles. We found that TC decreases with the rate of dTC/dp =-11 K/GPa with increasing pressure indicating that the transition observed in pressure dependence of XMCD at about 10 GPa corresponds to the HM-LM-transition. Therefore we conclude that, Fe3C exhibits magnetovolume instabilities.
