Abstract

Since the early 1970s there is a metaethical discussion about the question whether morality is always prior to other normativities in case of conflict. This debate about the so called overridingness thesis was taken further on a Münsteran conference in 2015 whose results were recently published in a collection of essays. With his contribution there Gerhard Ernst lifted the metaethical question up to a methodological level by criticizing the traditional method of concept analysis as inappropriate for its clarification. But in the light of its actual claim in the given context, these and other objections against conceptual analysis are unsustainable. Therefore, the particular points of criticism are summed up, systematized and refuted here. At the same time, the methodological scope of conceptual analysis will also be shown as restricted. Thus a moderate version of the overridingness thesis can be made plausible.
