Abstract

The catalytic reduction of nitrate by H2 over supported bimetallic catalysts reduces nitrate to N2. However, ammonium ions were formed as a undesired by-product. To optimize the catalysts concerning the activity as well as the selectivity to N2, an exact knowledge about their structure and functioning is necessary. This thesis describes the preparation of PdSn/Al203 and PdCu/Al203 catalysts, their characterization by TEM, TPR, EXAFS, chemisorption of H2 and CO, DSC, 119Sn Mössbauer and FTIR spectroscopy. To elucidate the relation between the structure of the catalysts and the catalytic effects, the results of the characterization and the catalytic tests were compared. Based on the obtained results, a model for the reduction of nitrate postulated in the literature could be verified. Concerning the catalytic activity and selectivity to N2, the PdSn/Al203 catalysts were superior than the PdCu/Al203 catalysts.
