Abstract

Diese Dissertation widmet sich dem Stedinger Bauernaufstand von 1234 und seiner Rezeptionsgeschichte im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, insbesondere unter dem Fokus einer regionalen Identitätsstiftung – sei es als Freiheitskämpfer im Vormärz, antikatholischer Mythos im Kulturkampf, ideologische Überhöhung im Nationalsozialismus oder als Beweis für den andauernden Kampf der Klassen in der DDR-Geschichtsschreibung und Literatur. Darüber hinaus spielen die Stedinger bis heute eine nicht zu unterschätzende Rolle in der regionalen Kultur und den damit verbundenen Identitätsdebatten. Der Stedinger-Mythos steht dabei in enger Verbindung mit dem Selbstbild und der Identität der Bewohner der Wesermarsch zwischen Bremen, Oldenburg und Nordseeküste.

The Stedinger peasants as political myth: exploitation, politicisation or regional role model?

This doctoral thesis focuses on the Stedinger peasants’ revolt during the early 13th century and how later generations retold this story as part of a process to form a (regional) identity – from a tale of freedom fighters during the revolution of 1848 to an anti-Catholic myth during the „Kulturkampf“, from being politically exploited during the Nazi era to being made into an example for historically proven class struggles in the GDR. But more importantly: The Stedinger have been playing an essential role in the regional culture, establishing a close link to what up to this day forms the self-image and identity of those living in the marchlands between Bremen, Oldenburg and the North Sea coast.
