Abstract

Quantum chemical and quantum dynamical investigations of the photo chemistry of water on a titanium dioxide surface

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

In this thesis, photochemical reactions of water on a rutile (110) surface were studied from first principles. A Ti9O18 cluster embedded in a point charge field was used to model the surface. Five dimensional potential energy surfaces for the electronic ground and an electronically excited state were calculated on a CASSCF level of theory. The excited state corresponds to a cationic water species. Using artificial neural networks fitting of these surfaces was possible. Quantum dynamical simulations for the motion of the atoms in the photodesorption and photodissociation reactions were performed. Due to strong repulsive interactions in the excited state the desorption proceeds via an MGR mechanism. The photodissociation is dominated by a small energy barrier near the Franck-Condon region leading to partial dissociation only. Similarly, pronounced isotope effects are predicted.
