Abstract

The aim of this work was the investigation of the microbial attack and destruction of synthetic polymers which are frequently used in the care of monuments. For this reason, polymers (Acrylate, Cellulosederivat, Polyvinylacetat und Polyvinylalcohol) were inoculated with microorganisms which were proven on culture-historical objects in different countries. It turned out that none of the used polymers was resistant to a microbial attack; however differences became clearly in the intensity of the growth of the microorganisms. Of special interest was the microbial attack of black fungis and their characteristic growing on the synthetic polymers. Beyond that it was proven that synthetic polymers could successfully be protected from microbial degradation by the additive of copper salts.
