Abstract

Distribution of the Bur-reed (Sparganiumangustifolium) within the costal heathlands of Northwestern Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. – The historic as well as the recent distribution of Sparganium angustifolium and transitional forms towards Sparganium emersum within the lowland heaths of Northwestern Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium are described. Taking into account all available distribution data, including historical information, 265 localities were recognised, where the species has been reported. Of these, 67 populations have survived to the present. Problems in determination make it difficult to describe the exact distribution pattern. This is caused by the fact that many of the examined populations share characters which are intermediate between the traits of S. angustifolium and the closely related S. emersum. Although two hypotheses exist, one assumes two hybridizing species; the other emphasizing a single variable taxon, the real relationship seems still not to be understood. This present study illustrates a substantial population decrease in all three nations. The regional and national red list status as well as conservationmeasures are discussed
