Abstract

Investigation of near-field heat transfer on adsorbate covered and nanostructured surfaces

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

This thesis presents studies of the near-field heat transfer of adsorbate covered surfaces measured with the Near-Field-Scanning-Thermal-Microscope (NSThM). The NSThM is a microscope, based on an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope, with the ability to measure the heat transfer between a probe and a sample with nano-scale spatial resolution. To perform such experiments, the preparation and analysis capabilities of the NSThM setup were enhanced by a preparation chamber with a thermal evaporator, a gas inlet system and an Auger electron spectroscopy system. The selection of the adsorbates is based on the theoretically expected influence on the near-field heat transfer. The experiments cover sub-monolayers of iron, iron(II)-oxide, water, sodium chloride and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) deposited on top of a gold surface (Au(111)).
