Abstract

The distribution of chemoorganotrophic and chemolithotrophic microorganisms along chemical gradients at the chemocline of anoxic basins in the Central Baltic Sea was investigated in detail. Selective enrichments targeting heterotrophic and lithotrophic microorganisms were established. Growth was analysed by means of a newly developed highly sensitive fluorescent staining procedure and viable counts were determined along the chemical gradients. During stagnant conditions, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were detected in similar cell densities. Following the mixing and oxidation of the anoxic deep water in 2003, increased cell numbers of aerobic heterotrophs as well as aerobic and anaerobic sulphur oxidisers were accompanied by strongly decreased numbers of anaerobic organotrophs. The results suggest that following such mixing and oxidation events nitrate and manganese oxide preferentially serve as electron acceptors for microbial or chemical sulphur oxidation, where as organic material may predominantly be mineralised aerobically.
