Abstract

In professional nursing the use of computers and information technologies has been rising steadily in the past few years. As a result the question arose whether this knowledge is conveyed to nursing candidates as part of their training. In order to establish the status quo, a mail survey on the level of computing and information technology teaching in nursing schools was conducted in 1998/1999. An analyses of the 484 questionnaires returned (53%) revealed that nursing schools are heterogeneous with respect to the time spent on the transfer of this knowledge as well as with respect to the contents conveyed and the level of equipment available et cetera. However, due to the predominantly innovative attitude of school leaders it is anticipated that the backlog in many nursing schools can be reduced. To achieve this, the frame conditions in many facilities need to be improved. The research underlying this paper was conducted against the background of changing working conditions in general as a result of an increased use of computing and information technologies and the educational challenges arising from this and with respect to changes in the nursing sector in particular.
