Bicontinuous cubic mesophases may provide a new approach in the use of organics in photovoltaic devices caused by their three dimensional charge carrier properties. Therefore the main target of this work was the design of new polycatenar mesogens with the ability to form thermotropic bicontinuous cubic mesophases. These novel symmetric and nonsymmetric thiophene-based molecules were investigated by polarization microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray-scattering. It was found that some cubic phases are macroscopic chiral while others are macroscopic achiral depending on the phase type of the cubics. In some cases the underlying dynamic separation of enantiomorphic conformers also leads to mirror-symmetry breaking in isotropic liquids.
