The complex mesophase morphologies formed by X-shaped bolapolyphiles with two chemical incompatible lateral substituents have been well investigated in recent studies. Such compounds exhibit different types of lamellar, cubic and columnar phases, depending on the chain lengths, the volume ratio of the two lateral substituents and the length of the rigid central core. The columnar mesophases represent honeycomb-like arrays of polygonal cylinders, the interior of the cylinder cells can be identical or different. In this work novel X-shaped bolapolyphiles have been synthesized. One serie of p-terphenyl derived bolapolyphiles and one serie of oligo(phenyleneethinylene) derived bolapolyphiles are reported, where the length of both lateral chains (alkyl/semiperfluorinated alkyl chain or alkyl/alkyl) and the size of the polar headgroup has been modified. These mesogens form a huge variety of thermotropic liquid crystalline phases such as nematic and smectic phases, columnar phases with different symmetry and shape of the cylinder cross section, cubic phases und crystalline lamellar phases. Furthermore the oligo(phenyleneethinylene) derived bolapolyphiles were investigated with respect to their interaction with phospholipid membrans.
