Bibliographics: One of at least eight known prints of Luther’s so called ‘Grosser Sermon von dem Wucher’ [Long sermon on usury] in the year 1520. This copy is the first of two prints by the famous printer Adam Petri (1454-1527) in Basel. It carries a more explanatory title than the editions that were printed in the towns of Germany.
The other editions are:
In Wittenberg by Johann Rhau-Grunenberg, 1520, titled: Eyn Sermon von dem Wucher.
In Leipzig [leypsig] by Valentin [Ualten] Schumann, 1520, titled: Ein Sermon von dem wucher.
Also in Leipzig [Leypßgk] by Wolf[f]gang Stöckel, 1520, titled: Ein Sermon von dem Wucher.
Two prints in Nürnberg by Jobst Gutknecht, 1520, both titled: Ein sermon von dem wucher.
In Augsburg by Silvan [Siluanum] Otmar, 1520, titled: Ain Sermon von dem wůcher.
In 1519 Luther had already held the short ‘Sermon on Usury’ which was printed late in 1519.
The ‚Long Sermon on Usury‘ (with a brief addition) is reprinted as the second part of Luther’s longest and best known critique on the commercial developments of his time, titled: Von Kauffshandlung und Wucher [On Commerce and Usury], 1524.
